About Us

This is one of the oldest resorts in Indian River. We are proudly celebrating this milestone and happy to be a part of it all!

In 1922, Floyd A. Martin and his wife Fay, opened Martin’s Cottages. They ran the resort together until Floyd’s untimely death in 1935. Mr. Martin, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, fell victim of a hurricane that swept him through the Florida Keys. Fay continued to run the resort herself until 1999. She was an astounding 104 years old at the time of her passing. She was extremely loved and involved in the community of Indian River.

In 2000, the resort was sold to Jim Purtill and Marilyn Spoering. The preservation of the history of the resort was and has been very important to them. During the early years of ownership, the cabins and property went under a major overhaul! From new plumbing, electrical, drywall, additions, waterlines, sea walls, and boat slips just to name a few. With their hard work and vision, (also many friends & family pitching in to help) they successfully finished their renovations! Their hospitality and character amongst their guests have made them many friends and repeated guests along the way. Jim’s favorite phrase “ Life Is Good” is the popular motto around the resort and will be carried forward! Although Jim and Marilyn are retired, they won’t be far away. They will be making frequent stops to join in the all the fun down at the Tiki Bar!
